Live Case – Project

Develop and refine deer thermal survey procedures using drones.

A Collaboration Between

Project Synopsis

Deer aerial surveys have long been conducted using manned aircraft equipped with thermal cameras. With the advent of aerial drones and the miniaturization of sensors, these surveys can now be conducted more safely and economically using drone systems. The project goal is to develop standardized methodology to ensure high quality deer survey results that are scientifically valid and repeatable. Remote Intelligence has several deer survey projects scheduled for this winter to provide the field data, and the ability to conduct additional surveys to compare other methodologies as needed.

Company Overview

Remote Intelligence is an aerial drone service company who provides expert consultation, training, flight services, and data processing. We have focused primarily in the research, environmental, and energy sectors. Founded in 2013, we are early implementors in the drone market, with a strong client base and good growth. Our team, while small, is highly experienced and we are positioned strongly in the market. Our background is in the environmental sciences and mapping, which has meshed well with aerial drone technology. The values of higher image quality, rapid deployment, improved safety, affordability, and the ability to capture current conditions resonate with our clientele. Remote Intelligence has been a lead innovator, finding new solutions in these fields to streamline processes.

Key Project Milestones

  • February 4, 2020 - Learn About Remote Intelligence & Manned Aerial Surveys for Deer Population

    • What is the Remote Intelligence business model?
    • What types of customers do you guys serve?
    • What’s the purpose of thermal surveying?
    • What is wild life surveying? Who uses deer-related survey data?
    • How do drones offer an advantage over manned flights?
    • Why is it best to collect this data from the air?

    Suggested Deliverable:

Come to class prepared to discuss Remote Intelligence & Project Scope with RI Leadership

  • February 18, 2020 - Study Remote Intelligence Sampling Strategies and Data Already Collected

    • What type of data has Remote Intelligence collected?
    • What method has Remote Intelligence been using to collect data?
    • How is this similar and/or different to manned aerial surveys?
      • What types of aviation equipment were they using?
      • What height were they flying?
      • What types of sensors were they using?
      • Any other insights?
    • Compare with methodology and data from Army Corps of Engineers for Deer Population

    Suggested Deliverable:

Prepare a presentation for the Remote Intelligence team on what’s good about the manned aerial surveying process and what could be improved.Prepare for day in the field to explore using Remote Intelligence’s technology in real-time.

  • March 3, 2020 - Decide on Additional Sampling That is Needed

    • Students analyze data sets (stills and video) to explore what sampling mythology is working best
      • Continuous video vs. grid photos
    • How would you recommend improving these methods? Consider the use of alternate set-up and design of the survey.
    • What low-cost improvements might you recommend to result in better data collection?
    • How would you recommend moving forward with the new mythology?
    • Why would this potentially produce better results?

    Suggested Deliverable:

Develop a presentation on your analysis of the data sets collected by Remote Intelligence and your recommendations for improvements

  • April 23, 2020 - Final Presentation: Comparison of Methods Completed, Recommendations Completed

    • Final Analysis of all Field Data Collected
    • Did the results improve with the new mythology?
    • How can the new mythology be further improved using AI, AR/VR, or other specialized software systems?
    • How would you recommend moving forward? What are the cost and operational implications?

    Suggested Deliverable:

Prepare a final presentation to be presented to your peers, the academic community, and the leadership team from Remote Intelligence about the results Prepare faculty materials so they can disseminate any results to scientific community and for marketing purposes
