Project Synopsis

Since 1935, Hioki EE. Corporation has been at the forefront of the electrical manufacturing industry, and their track record of environmental and social sustainability activities extends nearly a half century. This year (2021) marks the 45th anniversary of the adoption of The Hioki Philosophy expressed as the company’s “Respect for Humanity and Contribution to Society”. Leadership at Hioki know that in order to be effective, sustainability efforts must be holistic and integrated into the organizational culture and system of incentives and decision-making. Our objective is to elevate Hioki’s commitment and value to global sustainability efforts by developing an organization culture of sustainability, one that extends across our multi-national corporation to endow our employees and other stakeholders with a sense of sustainability ownership and empower individual and collective action.

  • August 18, 2021 - Assess the status quo of corporate sustainability-related strategic approaches, activities and initiatives

     

    • How does the Hioki corporation define corporate sustainability and their role in the broader effort toward increased sustainability?
    • In what ways is sustainability integrated into the the company’s strategic plan?
    • What is the current state of corporate sustainability like (sustainability performance)?
      • What is the role of the leadership team?
      • Are there specific networks/structures that have been organized to achieve sustainability goals?
      • How is sustainability being valued beyond the shareholders’ pockets?
      • What are the ways that sustainability is already embedded in routines?
      • How is it currently being assessed?
      • What do assessments suggest about opportunities for improvement?

  • September 1, 2021 - Conduct analysis to identify universal and culture-bound drivers and sustainability opportunities

    • What strategies and tactics are best suited for this case to identify both universal and culture-bound drivers for increasing corporate sustainability?

  • September 15, 2021 - Propose a feasible strategy for cultural change that works vis-a-vis the company's strategic efforts toward reducing their environmental footprint

    • What approach and strategies do you recommend for embedding principles of sustainability at all levels of the organizational culture? How do these recommendations correspond with the mission, values, and strategic plan? 
    • What are some key ways Hioki can elevate sustainability as a priority in their systems of incentives and decision-making? To promote an environment where the culture is co-created through stakeholder participation?
    • How can the company capitalize on internal and external networks and natural and appointed leadership for promoting a culture of sustainability?
    • What are some culturally-grounded activities that can promote the socialization to and adoption of sustainability principles and routines across the social ecology of the organization? 
    • What culturally grounded positive strategies can the company use to overcome ambivalence, ambiguity, resistance, and other sources of friction?
    • How can Hioki extend the capital for building a sustainable culture generated through these strategies and activities through their communications with stakeholders, particularly investors? How can the company celebrate and share their stories of success in the various cultural contexts?
