Capstone – Project

Partnership Success Internship

A Collaboration Between

Project Synopsis

CapSource has recently established a department committed to instructional design and partnerships success. Key functions of this department involve collaborating with cross-functional teams and external partners to 1) grow CapSource’s capacity to design, execute, and evaluate high-quality, high-impact experiential learning products and services that drive successful outcomes for stakeholders, and 2) develop and execute initiatives and plans that deliver value to CapSource customers and lead to successful partnership. At this early stage in the development of this department, the newly appointed director is seeking support in the following areas:

  1. Strengthening customer onboarding guidance and resources in multiple user platforms and instances;
  2. Evaluating key scoping and design processes to identify opportunities for and strategies to increase efficiency and reduce waste; and
  3. Researching effective and best practices for developing, implementing, and evaluating mentoring programs in higher education.

Company Overview

CapSource provides students and their institutions with access to a directory of companies interested in collaborating through experiential learning. Using our hands-on collaborations like Site Visits, Co-Ops, Live Business Cases, and Capstone Projects, students learn by working on real challenges with business leaders from our network of host companies. We help design the projects so that they align teaching goals with company objectives in order to maximize the outcomes for all parties.

Key Project Milestones

  • July 9, 2021 - Deep Dive Into CapSource through the Partnership Success Lens

    Guiding Inquiries:

    • Who is CapSource? What do we do and why (mission, vision, goals)?
    • What products and services do we offer? Which of these are recent additions to our portfolio of offerings?
    • Who are our target customers?
    • What are the main “departments”, what are their key functions, and who is responsible for their success?
    • What is the role of Instructional Design & Partnership Success (IDPS) in achieving CapSource’s mission and goals? What are some of the key ways we measure success?
    • What are key processes or instances where IDPS collaborates with Academic Partnerships? Industry Partnerships? Product?
    • Record notes in your Digital Internship Journal

    Suggested Deliverable:

Digital Internship Journal Entries/Notes (informal, reflexive; your choice of a combination of text, tables, graphics; give priority to content over design)

  • July 24, 2021 - Strengthening customer onboarding guidance and resources in multiple user platforms and instances

    • Support efforts of the Director of IDPS to improve guidance by accessing current Forms and inserting instructive language in description and placeholder options for fields where users are asked to supply information about a proposed project.
    • Ensure duplication and consistency of improvements across all instances.
    • Draw upon your “outsider” perspective to survey a range of CapSource website, features and functions to identify areas of ambiguity, contradiction, or jargon where additional context or guidance should be provided.
    • Create and maintain a Google.doc journal. Maintain a record of your observations (screen shots and notes outlining issues or “gaps” identified), questions, and any recommendations you have for resolution.

    Suggested Deliverable:

    • Updated/corrected Forms
    • Journal Entries
    • Ideas/Suggestions Memorandum based upon results evidence in Internship Journal
  • August 2, 2021 - Identify opportunities for and strategies to increase efficiency and reduce waste in scoping and design

    • Diagram the sourcing and design process based upon how it actually is occurring
      • This includes all major steps and motions in the process from initial request by customer to project launch
    • Estimate the following per program:
      • Average time to program completion (from and including Requirements Gathering/Request for Proposal meeting to project launch/kick-off)
      • # of meetings with clients
      • # of internal attendees and their role/department at meetings with client (by meeting type – see Scoping & Design Meetings attached document)
      • # of hours spent by internal IP, AP, ID per program
    • Where do you identify inefficiencies in the process?
      • Which of these can be solved by reorganization of work, or changing the way we work?
      • Which of these can only be solved through technology?

    Suggested Deliverable:

    • Updated/corrected Forms
    • Internship Journal Entries
    • Ideas/Suggestions Memorandum based upon results evidence in Internship Journal Entries
  • August 14, 2021 - Research effective and best practices for developing, implementing, and evaluating mentoring programs in higher education

Please note: Activities for this milestone should be integrated throughout the duration of the internship and provide productive activity during otherwise down-time associated with other assigned projects.

    • Conduct research in association, trade, and other resources to develop an understanding of mentoring programs for students in higher education. Create an annotated (short annotations) bibliography of quality resources in your Internship Journal. Some suggestions for your research focus include:
      • What are the different types of programs (choose a way to meaningfully categorize, such as purpose, target audience, etc.)?
      • What are the key components and features of effective or successful programs?
      • What characteristics and qualifications make for a strong mentor?
      • How are students and mentors matched?
      • What is the typical duration or life cycle of the relationship?
      • What key roles and responsibilities do mentors have to students, and vice versa?
      • What outcomes are expected (e.g. new networks, specific knowledge/skills, etc.)?
      • How are outcomes measured and evaluated? What criteria are considered most important, and why?
    • Identify 2-3 programs that could serve as models for academic programs/divisions seeking to design and deliver mentoring programs for current students.
    • Create a chart outlining the key components, features, characteristics of the program(s).
